Why Your Card Choice Matters

Using the wrong card in Bangkok can cost you five to ten percent of every transaction in hidden fees and poor exchange rates. Most traditional bank cards charge foreign transaction fees of 1-3 percent, use inflated exchange rates, and add ATM withdrawal fees on top.

Modern travel cards from fintech companies solve most of these problems. The difference over a two-week trip can easily be 3,000-5,000 THB saved.

Wise Card

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is the most popular travel card among expats and digital nomads in Bangkok.

  • Exchange rate: The mid-market rate with a small transparent conversion fee of 0.35-0.6 percent depending on the currency pair.
  • Thai baht balance: You can convert and hold THB in advance, locking in a rate you like before you arrive.
  • ATM withdrawals: Free up to 200 USD equivalent per month, then a 1.75 percent fee. The Thai ATM fee of 220 THB still applies.
  • Card payments: No foreign transaction fee when paying in Thai baht from a THB balance.
  • Multi-currency account: Hold 50-plus currencies and switch between them instantly.
Convert your home currency to Thai baht in the Wise app before you land in Bangkok. This avoids the conversion fee on every individual purchase.

Revolut Card

Revolut is another strong option with a generous free tier and good exchange rates.

  • Exchange rate: Interbank rate with no markup during market hours (Monday to Friday). A 1 percent markup applies on weekends.
  • Free plan limits: Up to 1,000 GBP equivalent in fee-free exchange per month. After that, a 0.5 percent fee applies.
  • ATM withdrawals: Free up to 200 GBP equivalent per month on the free plan. The Thai 220 THB fee still applies.
  • Premium and Metal plans: Higher ATM limits and no weekend markup. Worth it for heavy users.
  • Disposable virtual cards: Generate one-time card numbers for online purchases, useful for booking Thai hotels and activities.
Revolut's weekend markup can be avoided by converting to THB on a weekday and spending from the THB balance over the weekend.

Charles Schwab Debit Card

The Charles Schwab High Yield Investor Checking Account debit card is the best option for US-based travellers who primarily use ATMs.

  • ATM fee refunds: Schwab reimburses all ATM fees worldwide, including the Thai 220 THB fee. This is unique and extremely valuable.
  • No foreign transaction fees: Zero percent markup on international purchases.
  • Exchange rate: Uses the Visa network rate, which is close to the mid-market rate.
  • Downside: Requires opening a linked Schwab brokerage account (no minimum balance or trading required).
  • Downside: Not available to non-US residents.

Cash Exchange in Bangkok

Despite the rise of cards, Bangkok is still heavily cash-dependent. Street food, markets, taxis, and many small businesses only accept Thai baht. Here are the best places to exchange.

  • SuperRich (green branch): Consistently the best rates in Bangkok. Main branch near BTS Chit Lom, with smaller branches in major malls.
  • SuperRich (orange branch): A different company with very similar rates. Both are excellent.
  • Vasu Exchange (Sukhumvit Soi 7/1): Popular with expats and very competitive rates.
  • Bangkok Bank exchange counters: Decent rates and found in every mall. More convenient but slightly worse than SuperRich.
  • Avoid: Airport exchange booths, hotel front desks, and roadside money changers. Their rates are 5-10 percent worse.
Bring crisp, clean, recent-year banknotes from home. Thai exchange shops offer better rates for notes in good condition. Old, torn, or marked bills may be refused.

Dynamic Currency Conversion Warning

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is a scheme where a Thai ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency instead of Thai baht. It sounds convenient but always costs more.

The DCC exchange rate includes a 3-5 percent markup over the real rate. On a 10,000 THB withdrawal, that's an extra 300-500 THB lost for nothing.

  • At ATMs: When the screen asks "withdraw in USD/EUR/GBP or THB?" always select THB.
  • At card terminals: If the cashier asks "your currency or Thai baht?" always say Thai baht.
  • If charged in your home currency by mistake: Contact your card issuer to dispute the DCC markup.
Some ATMs and terminals default to your home currency and make the THB option less obvious. Read every screen carefully before confirming.

Which Card to Choose

The right card depends on where you are based and how you prefer to pay.

  • Best overall: Wise card. Works everywhere, transparent fees, and the THB balance feature is ideal for Bangkok.
  • Best for US travellers using ATMs: Charles Schwab. The ATM fee refund saves 220 THB per withdrawal.
  • Best free option for Europeans: Revolut free plan with weekday conversions.
  • Best combination: Wise for daily spending plus Charles Schwab for ATM withdrawals. This covers both card payments and cash needs at the lowest total cost.

Whichever card you choose, bring a backup. Cards get lost, stolen, or blocked by fraud detection systems. A second card from a different provider ensures you're never stranded without access to money.
