Types of Extensions Available
Thailand allows several extension categories. The 30-day visa exemption (granted on arrival to most Western passport holders) can be extended once for an additional 30 days. A 60-day Tourist Visa (TR) obtained from a Thai consulate can also be extended by 30 days, giving up to 90 days total.
Non-Immigrant visas (B, O, ED, etc.) typically extend by one year and require category-specific documents like work permits, marriage certificates, or school enrollment letters. Each category has its own financial and supporting requirements.
Where to Apply in Bangkok
The main location is the Bangkok Immigration Bureau on Chaengwattana Road in the Government Complex (Soi Chaengwattana 7). Building B handles most extensions. Take a taxi or the Pink Line MRT to Government Complex Station. Operating hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with lunch breaks 12:00-1:00 PM.
Some shopping mall service points like MBK and Imperial World Lat Phrao offer limited extension services with shorter queues, though not all visa types are processed there.
Documents You'll Need
Bring your passport with current entry stamp, departure card (TM.6 if issued), one 4x6 cm passport photo taken within 6 months, and the completed TM.7 application form. Cash for the ฿1,900 fee is required (no cards). For Non-Immigrant extensions, add category-specific paperwork.
Make at least two photocopies of your passport photo page and current visa/entry stamp. The Chaengwattana office has copy services on-site, but lines are long and prices marked up. Photos are also available at on-site booths if needed.
The TM.7 Form
TM.7 is the standard application for extension of stay. Download it from the Immigration website or pick up free copies at the office. Fill it in black ink with no corrections. Required fields include passport details, current address in Thailand, contact phone, and reason for extension.
Sign the form in front of the officer if possible. Don't pre-sign every page until asked. Errors require a fresh form, costing you queue position.
Queue Tips for Chaengwattana
Arrive by 7:00 AM to secure a low queue number. Doors open around 8:00 AM. Bring water, snacks, and entertainment for your phone, the WiFi is unreliable. Ground floor has cafes and a small canteen.
Alternatively, use a visa agent (฿2,500-฿4,000) who handles paperwork and queues for you. They know which officers are strict and how to present marginal cases. Reputable agents operate near the Immigration office and accept payment only after successful extension.
