Ayutthaya
Ancient Capital & UNESCO World Heritage
Why Visit Ayutthaya?
Ayutthaya was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam for 417 years (1350-1767) — one of the largest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world before the Burmese army burned it to the ground. Today, the UNESCO-listed ruins of temples, palaces, and monasteries spread across an island surrounded by three rivers. The Buddha head entwined in tree roots at Wat Mahathat is one of the most photographed images in Southeast Asia.
Ayutthaya is 80km north of Bangkok — 1.5 hours by train from Hua Lamphong station (฿20 for 3rd class), 1 hour by minivan from Victory Monument, or 1.5 hours by car. The ruins are spread across the island and best explored by bicycle (฿50/day rental) or tuk-tuk (฿200-300/hour). Most visitors spend 4-6 hours seeing the main sites.
