Thonburi is the original Bangkok — the west bank of the Chao Phraya River that served as Thailand's capital before Rama I crossed to Rattanakosin in 1782. Today it is the quiet, green, canal-laced side of the city that most tourists skip. Wat Arun stands on this bank, ICONSIAM is the flashiest mall in Southeast Asia, and the khlongs (canals) preserve a way of life that has disappeared from the rest of Bangkok: stilt houses, floating vendors, orchid farms, and temple cats.
Getting to Thonburi means crossing the river — by express boat, hotel shuttle, or the BTS Gold Line to ICONSIAM. The canal tours are the highlight: hire a longtail boat from Tha Tien pier and spend 2 hours winding through narrow waterways past temples, artist studios, and floating kitchens.
