Why Visit Old Town (Rattanakosin)Ciudad Antigua (Rattanakosin)?
Rattanakosin is where Bangkok began — the royal island built in 1782 when King Rama I moved the capital across the river from Thonburi. The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), Wat Pho (the reclining Buddha), and Wat Arun across the river are all here. This is the Bangkok most visitors picture: golden spires, orange-robed monks, incense smoke, and centuries of history layered into every street.
Old Town has no BTS or MRT stations — you get here by river boat (Chao Phraya Express to Tha Tien or Tha Chang piers), taxi, or tuk-tuk. Start early (8am) to beat the heat and tour groups. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho can be done in a morning, then cross the river to Wat Arun in the afternoon. Khlong (canal) boats offer a fascinating back-route through old Bangkok.
⭐ Best time: Arrive at the Grand Palace when it opens at 8:30am. By 10am the tour buses arrive and it gets unbearably crowded. Wear long trousers and covered shoulders — strict dress code enforced.

Safety in Old Town (Rattanakosin)Ciudad Antigua (Rattanakosin)
✅ Old Town safety: Very safe area with heavy tourist police presence around the Grand Palace. Main concern is scam artists — anyone who approaches you unsolicited near temples is likely running a scam.
Safest areas for visitors
- Grand Palace area — Very safe. Tourist police, CCTV, guards. Watch for "palace is closed today" scammers.
- Wat Pho — Safe and well-managed. Beware of unofficial "guides" offering massage discounts.
- River piers — Safe. Use official Chao Phraya Express boats — avoid unlicensed longtail overcharging.
- Side streets at night — Generally safe but poorly lit. Taxis or Grab recommended after dark.
🚨 Scam alert: If anyone tells you the Grand Palace is "closed today" and offers to take you to a "special temple" or gem shop — it is a scam. The palace is open every day 8:30am-3:30pm.
