Old Town (Rattanakosin)
Historic Heart of Bangkok
Why Visit Old Town (Rattanakosin)?
Rattanakosin is where Bangkok began — the royal island built in 1782 when King Rama I moved the capital across the river from Thonburi. The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), Wat Pho (the reclining Buddha), and Wat Arun across the river are all here. This is the Bangkok most visitors picture: golden spires, orange-robed monks, incense smoke, and centuries of history layered into every street.
Old Town has no BTS or MRT stations — you get here by river boat (Chao Phraya Express to Tha Tien or Tha Chang piers), taxi, or tuk-tuk. Start early (8am) to beat the heat and tour groups. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho can be done in a morning, then cross the river to Wat Arun in the afternoon. Khlong (canal) boats offer a fascinating back-route through old Bangkok.
