Why Visit Kanchanaburi?

Kanchanaburi is where WWII history meets natural paradise. The Bridge on the River Kwai — made infamous by the 1957 film — still stands, and the Death Railway built by Allied POWs and Asian forced laborers at the cost of over 100,000 lives runs along the cliff face. Beyond the history, Erawan National Park has a seven-tier turquoise waterfall where you can swim in natural pools surrounded by jungle. It is one of the most beautiful natural sites in Thailand.

Kanchanaburi town is 2-3 hours west of Bangkok by bus or minivan from Mo Chit or Southern Bus Terminal. A day trip is possible but tight — you'll need to choose between the Bridge/Death Railway OR Erawan Falls (they're 70km apart). For both, plan an overnight stay. Many visitors take a 2-day trip: Day 1 for history (bridge, museum, cemetery), Day 2 for nature (Erawan Falls, jungle).

Best time: Erawan Falls are best November-May when water is clear turquoise. In rainy season (Jun-Oct) the water turns brown and upper tiers may close. For the Bridge, any time of year works. The November light show commemorating the WWII bombing is spectacular.

Safety in Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi safety: Very safe small town and national parks. Main risks are natural — strong currents at Erawan Falls, steep trails, and the heat. Wear proper shoes for waterfall hiking.

Safest areas for visitors

  • Bridge on the River Kwai — Safe. Step into refuges when trains cross. Walk carefully on the tracks.
  • Erawan Falls — Safe but slippery rocks. Strong currents at tiers 4-7. Don't swim alone. Wear water shoes.
  • Kanchanaburi town — Very safe. Quiet, friendly, low crime. Standard caution at night.
  • Death Railway train ride — Safe. Trains move slowly along the cliff. Stay seated.
👟 Erawan tip: Wear proper water shoes or sandals with grip — the rocks at Erawan are incredibly slippery. Tier 1-3 are easy walks. Tier 4-7 require real hiking. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone. The fish nibble your feet in the pools (harmless).
