The ฿1,000/Day Backpacker Plan

Sample budget: hostel dorm ฿300, three street food meals at ฿60 each (฿180), public transport ฿80, one paid attraction or activity ฿200, water/snacks ฿80, contingency ฿160. Total ฿1,000. This works for solo travelers comfortable with hostel dorms and street food.

Stretch further at ฿700/day by sticking to free attractions, walking between nearby sights, eating at university canteens, and using buses (฿8-฿24) instead of BTS. Couples sharing a private hostel room (฿600-฿900) often spend ฿1,500-฿1,800 combined.

Free and Cheap Attractions

Free: Lumphini Park, Benchakitti Park, Chatuchak Weekend Market browsing, Talad Rot Fai night markets, walking Yaowarat (Chinatown) at night, exploring temples like Wat Saket (Golden Mount, ฿50 small fee), Wat Mahathat, and Wat Suthat. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) is free with rotating exhibitions.

Worth-the-fee classics: Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (฿500) once in your life, Wat Pho reclining Buddha (฿300), Jim Thompson House (฿200). For viewpoints, free or cheap alternatives to luxury rooftops include Mahanakhon Skywalk during off-peak hours (฿880 but huge) or simply having a beer at a budget rooftop bar.

Cheap Eats Strategy

Street food meals run ฿40-฿80: pad krapao (basil pork over rice) ฿50-฿70, pad thai ฿60-฿80, khao man gai (chicken rice) ฿50, boat noodles ฿20-฿30 per small bowl. Yaowarat (Chinatown), Or Tor Kor Market, and the alleys around Victory Monument offer some of Bangkok's best cheap food.

Lunch buffets at Indian restaurants (Sukhumvit Soi 11 area) run ฿200-฿300. University canteens at Chulalongkorn and Thammasat serve full meals for ฿40-฿70 to anyone walking in. 7-Eleven hot meals (฿35-฿65) are surprisingly decent and fill emergency gaps.

Transport Savings

BTS Skytrain ฿17-฿62 per ride, MRT similar. Daily passes don't exist for tourists, but the Rabbit Card (BTS) and MRT Card avoid the ฿1 single-ticket surcharge. Buses (฿8-฿24) are dirt cheap if you're patient with traffic.

Grab and Bolt (ride-hailing) average ฿80-฿250 across central Bangkok and beat metered taxis for fairness. Motorbike taxis ฿20-฿80 within neighborhoods get you through traffic. Walk between BTS stations along Sukhumvit when distance is short, taxi mileage adds up fast.

Where Backpackers Stay

Khaosan Road area dorms ฿250-฿500 (NapPark, Lub d Khao San). Silom budget hotels ฿800-฿1,500 private rooms. Sukhumvit Soi 11 Lub d Bangkok Sukhumvit ฿500-฿900 dorms with great social atmosphere. Pratunam guesthouses ฿400-฿800 private rooms close to shopping.

Book through Hostelworld or Booking.com for cancelable rates. Walking in for unbooked beds works in low season at smaller hostels for 10-20% off online prices. For stays over a week, ask reception about weekly rates or message guesthouses on LINE for monthly deals (฿4,000-฿8,000/month for basic private rooms).
