Best Markets

  • Chatuchak Weekend Market - 15,000 stalls, BTS Mo Chit
  • Asiatique - riverside night market, Ferris wheel
  • Talad Rot Fai (Train Market) Srinakarin or Ratchada
  • Sampeng Lane - wholesale alley in Chinatown
  • Pratunam - clothing wholesale, very cheap
  • Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (weekends, local-favored)

Bargaining Tips

Bargain at markets, never at malls. The opening price is usually 2-3x the real one for tourists.

  • Smile and stay polite - aggressive bargaining backfires
  • Start at 40-60% of asking price
  • Walk away if no movement - they often call you back
  • Cash gets better prices than card
  • Buying multiple items? Ask for a "set price"

VAT Refund

Tourists can claim back 7% VAT on goods taken out of Thailand. The shop must be a "VAT Refund for Tourists" participant (sticker in window).

  • Minimum: ฿2,000 per store per day
  • Total trip minimum: ฿5,000
  • Get the P.P.10 form at the store with passport
  • Goods must leave Thailand within 60 days
  • Show goods + form at airport VAT counter before check-in

Shipping Home

Thailand Post EMS is reliable and reasonable for clothes and small items. Furniture and large souvenirs are best handled by shop-arranged sea freight, which often runs 30-50 days.

Always insure shipments over ฿10,000. EMS insurance is roughly 1% of declared value.

What to Buy

  • Thai silk (Jim Thompson at Surawong)
  • Cotton clothing at Chatuchak
  • Spa products (Harnn, Erb, Panpuri)
  • Coffee, dried fruit, snacks
  • Handmade ceramics from SookSiam
  • Tailored suits (Sukhumvit Soi 11 or Charoen Krung)
