Is Bangkok Good Solo

Bangkok is one of the easier Asian capitals for solo travel. English signage is widespread, the BTS and MRT are simple, and you will rarely eat alone if you stay in the right neighborhood.

Safe Neighborhoods

  • Sukhumvit (Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lor) - safe, well-lit, BTS access
  • Silom/Sala Daeng - business district, very safe
  • Riverside (Saphan Taksin) - safe, scenic, hotel-heavy
  • Khao San area - safe but touristy and noisy
  • Ari - quieter, hipster, very safe
Avoid the empty industrial sois off Rama 4 late at night. Stick to areas within 500m of a BTS or MRT station.

Where to Meet People

  • Free Bangkok walking tours (Old Town, Chinatown)
  • Hostel-organized Muay Thai nights at Lumpinee
  • Cooking classes at Silom Thai Cooking School
  • Pub crawls on Khao San and Sukhumvit Soi 11
  • Couchsurfing weekly events (still active in BKK)

Common Scams

None violent, all easy to spot once you know them.

  • "Grand Palace closed today" - it is not, walk past
  • Tuk-tuk ฿20 ride that goes to a gem store
  • Taxi refusing the meter - just walk to the next one
  • Bird seed at temples for "blessing" - decline
  • Jet ski "damage" deposits at beach trips

Solo-Friendly Activities

  • Cooking classes (you finish with shared dinner)
  • Muay Thai matches with hostel groups
  • Day trips to Ayutthaya (small group tours = built-in friends)
  • Bang Krachao bike tours
  • Rooftop happy hours at Above Eleven, Octave
SafetyWing or comparable insurance is worth the $40-60/month. Solo travelers especially benefit because there is no one else to handle a hospital visit for you.
