Bangkok Bank: Best for Foreigners

Bangkok Bank (BBL) is the most foreigner-friendly major Thai bank. Branches consistently accept long-stay visa holders, English service is widely available, and their New York branch lets US-based clients send domestic wires that arrive in Thailand within 1-2 days at low cost.

The Be1st Smart debit card works internationally and links to mobile banking. The Bangkok Bank Mobile Banking app is functional in English though less polished than competitors. Best choice if you receive international wires regularly or want maximum branch acceptance probability.

Kasikornbank: Best App

Kasikornbank (KBank) wins on technology. The K-Plus app is the gold standard of Thai mobile banking: biometric login, instant PromptPay transfers, QR scan-and-pay everywhere, bill payment for all utilities and credit cards, mutual fund investing, and full English language support.

Branch acceptance for foreigners is good but slightly more variable than BBL. Best in EmQuartier, Siam Paragon, and Sukhumvit branches. The K-Shop merchant ecosystem also makes business banking smooth for nomads with side income.

SCB Easy and Others

SCB (Siam Commercial Bank) has improved its tech significantly with the SCB Easy app rivaling K-Plus in features. SCB Mae Manee account is popular for receiving online sales income. The bank is well-distributed but less consistently foreigner-friendly than BBL or KBank.

Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya) is the choice for Japanese expats with bilingual Japanese branches. Krungthai (KTB) handles most government payments and tax refunds, but has weaker mobile banking. TMB-Thanachart (TTB) and CIMB Thai serve niche segments.

Account Types Available

Savings accounts are the standard offering, with debit card and online banking access. Fixed deposits (FD) earn higher interest (1.5-2.5% for 12 months) but lock funds. Foreign Currency Deposit (FCD) accounts hold USD, EUR, GBP, JPY for those wanting to avoid baht conversion.

For visa purposes, Non-Resident Baht Accounts (NRBA) and special accounts for retirement visa funds (showing ฿800,000 seasoned) exist at most banks. Ask specifically when opening; standard savings accounts also count for most visa proofs.

Fees and ATM Card Notes

Account maintenance fees ฿50-฿100/month if balance falls below ฿2,000-฿5,000. ATM card annual fee ฿200-฿300. Cross-bank ATM withdrawals ฿20-฿30 in same province; ฿15-฿100 across provinces. Foreign card ATM withdrawals incur ฿220 fee on top of your home bank charges.
