Do you need a VPN in Thailand?
For most travelers, yes — but for less dramatic reasons than the marketing suggests. Thailand does not heavily filter the open internet. The real reasons to install a VPN before you arrive: protecting banking sessions on public WiFi, accessing your home country streaming library (Netflix shows by region, BBC iPlayer, Hulu), connecting to work systems that geofence by country, and occasionally reaching gambling or specific news sites that are blocked in Thailand.
A VPN also encrypts traffic on hostel and airport WiFi, where unsecured connections are common. Even if you do not need it daily, having one ready costs little and removes a category of risk.
Top three VPNs
NordVPN remains the all-rounder pick. Strong speeds on Singapore and Hong Kong servers (closest to Thailand), reliable streaming unblocking, and a clean app on every platform. Around 130 baht per month on a 2-year plan. ExpressVPN is the premium option — fastest connections in independent tests, best customer support, and the simplest interface. Around 250 baht per month on a 2-year plan. Surfshark is the budget winner with unlimited simultaneous devices on one account, around 90 baht per month on a 2-year plan, and speeds nearly matching NordVPN.
ProtonVPN deserves a mention for users who prioritize privacy — Switzerland-based, audited no-logs policy, and a usable free tier with limited servers.
Free vs paid
Most free VPNs log browsing data and sell it to advertisers. Many actively inject ads or malware. The two trustworthy free options are ProtonVPN free (slower speeds, limited countries, but legitimate) and the Opera browser built-in VPN (limited to browser traffic only). For anything financial or streaming-related, pay for a real service. The cost is a few dollars a month.
Server speeds
From Bangkok, the fastest VPN servers are in Singapore (around 30ms ping), Hong Kong (around 50ms), and Tokyo (around 70ms). Connecting to a US or European server adds 200-300ms latency, which is fine for streaming and browsing but noticeable on video calls. NordVPN and ExpressVPN both run optimized servers in Singapore that lose only 5-15% of base speed. On a 100 Mbps hotel connection, expect 70-90 Mbps through the VPN.
Banking and streaming
Banking apps from many countries flag overseas IPs as suspicious and sometimes lock accounts. Connecting via a VPN to a server in your home country before opening the app prevents this. For streaming, set the VPN to your home country to keep your usual Netflix, Disney+, or Hulu library — most major services no longer aggressively block VPNs as long as you stay in your home region.
Setup before you arrive
Install and test the VPN before flying. Some app store listings are restricted in certain countries, so download from the regular app store while at home. Pay for at least a one-month subscription before departure. On arrival in Bangkok, simply connect to a Singapore or your home country server. All major VPNs support phone, tablet, and laptop — set up every device you will use.
