Phra Pathom Chedi
Phra Pathom Chedi is the spiritual heart of Nakhon Pathom and one of Thailand's most sacred Buddhist sites. The current 127-meter golden bell-shaped stupa was rebuilt in the 1850s by King Rama IV over much older Mon-era ruins thought to date to the 6th century.
The chedi sits on raised terraces with four cardinal viharns containing standing, walking, reclining, and seated Buddha images. Entry is free though donations are welcomed. Allow 60-90 minutes to circle the complex.
Sanam Chandra Palace
Built by King Rama VI between 1907-1911, Sanam Chandra Palace is a charming hybrid of Thai and English Tudor architecture set in landscaped gardens. The main residence Phra Thinang Chali Mongkol Asana is the standout. Entry ฿50. The palace is a 5-minute drive from the chedi.
Fruit and Food Markets
The market wrapping the chedi is one of central Thailand's most colorful, famous for guavas, pomelo, khao laam (sticky rice in bamboo), and rice noodle dishes. Lunch for ฿80-150. Markets are busiest in the morning before 11am.
Getting There
Trains from Bangkok's Thonburi or Hua Lamphong stations run frequently and take about 1 hour for ฿14-30. The station drops you a 5-minute walk from the chedi. Minivans from Mo Chit cost ฿80 and take 75 minutes. Driving is straightforward via Highway 4.
Practical Tips
Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for temple visits. Mornings are cooler and the markets livelier. Combine Nakhon Pathom with the floating market at Damnoen Saduak (40 minutes away) for a fuller day trip. Bring small banknotes for offerings and stalls.
