Getting to Pattaya

Buses leave every 30 minutes from Ekkamai Bus Terminal (BTS Ekkamai) for ฿130, taking 2 hours to Pattaya's North Bus Station. Minivans from Mo Chit and Victory Monument cost ฿150 and drop closer to central Pattaya. Private taxi or Grab runs ฿1,800-2,500.

For an early start, board the 6:00 or 7:00 AM bus from Ekkamai to maximize daylight. Return buses run until around 9:00 PM.

Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is Pattaya's standout attraction: an enormous all-teak temple covered in intricate hand-carved Hindu and Buddhist figures, still under construction after 40 years. Entry ฿500. Allow 90 minutes including the included guided tour.

Beaches and Koh Larn Island

Pattaya Beach itself is a 4km city beach with chair rentals (฿100) and parasails offshore. Jomtien Beach to the south is cleaner and quieter. For postcard-blue water, hop on a 30-minute speedboat to Koh Larn (฿30 ferry, ฿300 speedboat) where Tien and Tawaen beaches are stunners.

Walking Street and Khao Pattaya Viewpoint

Khao Pattaya Hill Viewpoint is a free 5-minute drive south of the city, offering the best panoramic shot of Pattaya Bay. The huge gold Buddha at Wat Phra Yai sits at the same hill.

Walking Street is Pattaya's after-dark strip. By day it's closed and forgettable; visit only if you're overnighting and curious about the spectacle. Most family-friendly visitors skip it.

Practical Tips

One full day comfortably covers the Sanctuary of Truth, Jomtien Beach for lunch, and the viewpoint. Cabbing between attractions costs ฿100-300 each leg via Grab. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and beach clothes. Skip Pattaya's street tailors and unlicensed jet-ski rentals (notorious for scams).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pattaya worth visiting as a day trip?

Yes if you focus on the Sanctuary of Truth, Khao Pattaya viewpoint, and a beach lunch. Pattaya's bar-strip reputation can be skipped entirely. To enjoy the beach properly, an overnight stay works better.

How long does it take from Bangkok to Pattaya?

Around 2 hours by bus or minivan in normal traffic, longer on Friday afternoons. The new motorway has cut journey time significantly.

Which beach is best in Pattaya?

Jomtien Beach is cleaner and quieter than central Pattaya Beach. For a real beach day, take a 30-minute speedboat to Koh Larn island.

Should I take a tour or go independently?

Independent travel is cheap and easy with frequent buses. Tours make sense if you want hassle-free transport plus skip-the-line entry to attractions.
