What Is the ED Visa

The Education Visa, officially Non-Immigrant ED, lets foreigners legally stay in Thailand long-term to study at an approved institution. It was historically used by digital nomads to obtain long stays, but enforcement tightened from 2018 onwards: schools must now be approved by the Thai Ministry of Education (MOE), and attendance is monitored.

Since 2024, with the launch of the DTV visa, many digital nomads have shifted to the DTV. The ED Visa remains the right choice for those genuinely studying Thai language, Muay Thai, or other approved subjects.

Approved Study Types

Common ED Visa programs include Thai language (most popular), Muay Thai training at registered gyms, Buddhism and meditation at approved monasteries, traditional Thai massage at MOE-approved schools, and university degree programs. International schools also issue ED Visas for students aged 12-18.

Choosing a School

Verify the school is MOE-approved before paying. Reputable Bangkok Thai-language schools include Walen, Pro Language, and Duke Language. For Muay Thai, top training camps in Bangkok and on Phuket can sponsor ED Visas. Read recent reviews from current students about visa support and class quality.

Application Process

The school issues an enrollment letter and an MOE approval letter. You then apply at a Thai consulate abroad (Vientiane, Penang, and Savannakhet are popular for ED Visa runs) with passport, photos, the school letters, financial proof of about ฿20,000, and a ฿2,000 visa fee. Initial processing takes 2-5 days.

On arrival in Thailand you receive an initial 90-day stamp. You then extend at immigration for ฿1,900 per 90-day period to total one year.

Reporting and Renewals

ED Visa holders must file 90-day address reports like other long-stay visa holders. Renewals require updated school attendance records, a progress letter, and a Thai language test for language students. Annual visa runs to a Thai consulate abroad reset the visa for another year, with a maximum cap that varies by school and visa officer discretion.
